Grant Burgess and Guttah comprise a music production duo called Widowmaker. Based in Gresham, Oregon, they produce boom bap, trip hop, and down tempo pieces. While their core music-making process is rooted in the sample-based traditions of the 1990s, they regularly incorporate live instruments, unorthodox sound design techniques, and obscure recording equipment and media. They have released records with Big Ghost LTD, Westside Gunn, Conway the Machine, Ayatollah, and a host of other artists.
Because beatmaking has been such a huge part of their lives, in 2019 they opened a music production school in Gresham called Midschool. By bringing the artform that they love to their home town and building a community around it, Midschool has helped bring a diverse and accessible form of expression to a part of the Portland area that doesn’t have many opportunities like that.
