For our third episode of Sounds Visual Radio, we sat down with Edgardo Gocobachi Doumerc, better known as DJ Sesqui. He tells us how his sister’s boyfriend’s collection of swap meet cassette mixtapes sparked began his lifelong love of hip-hop, why L.A. in the ’90s was such a fertile atmosphere for funk, jazz, hip-hop, and soul, how he ended up digging for records in South America, his affiliation with now-legendary DJs and bands like the Breakestra and the late great DJ DUSK, and why it’s okay to judge records by their covers–sometimes, anyway.
DJ Sesqui was also the host of the acclaimed show “Astral Traveling” on KBOO Radio in Portland for seven years. Guests included: Phil Ranelin, Micheal White, Brian Auger, Miguel Atwood Ferguson, Rob-Swift, Kid Named Miles, DJ Nobody, Derf Reklaw, Dwight Tribble, Lee Fields, Bernard “Pretty” Purdie, Teppo Mäkynen, Dr. Lonnie Smith, and many others.
